Michigan Business Makes Shopping for “Made in Michigan” Products Easy

In 2005, Goodrich Michigan couple Jim and Patti Travioli, created their internet website www.SimplyMichigan.com, with the intent of providing general Michigan information, facts, trivia, and a few products that were made in Michigan. Little did they know that it would turn into an internet shopper’s favorite destination for “Made in Michigan” products.

Michigan’s economy may be at a low, but consumers can make a difference when they choose to shop Michigan small businesses. If Michiganders spent just $10 per week on local food and products, they would put millions of dollars back into the Michigan economy.

“We buy directly from the Michigan farmer, manufacturer, or producer. We like to learn from each company about their products so we can share the information with our customers,” said Patti Travioli. “We buy from small businesses that want help getting their products to the general consumer as well as from larger Michigan companies that many people would be more familiar with.”

In addition to the website, Simply Michigan has a retail location at the Lansing City Market, an indoor year round market. You can also find Simply Michigan at seasonal markets around the state from June through October.   Patti believes that Simply Michigan’s products are complementary to the farmer’s fresh local produce found at these markets. She says, “You can buy your ingredients for a fresh salad, and then pick up a wooden bowl made in Michigan from Simply Michigan to serve it in!”

In September, the Travioli’s introduced their own line of Simply Michigan labeled products. “I was looking for a low sugar jam recipe, and after some taste testing, began making Michigan Tart Cherry and Michigan Blueberry Jam using maple syrup as a sweetener”, said Patti. “Before I knew it, besides tart cherry and blueberry, I was making Apple Cider Jelly from our local cider mill without any added sugar. These are Michigan’s largest fruit crops, along with being a large maple syrup producing state, so the recipes all made sense. The combination of the fruits and the syrup make a fresh fruit tasting jam with “fruit first” ingredients, followed by maple syrup as a sweetener. The Apple Cider Jelly is tart and naturally sweetened with no added sugars.”

Jim Travioli said their objectives were clear while developing their Simply Michigan product line. “We wanted to use Michigan products from local Michigan businesses, emphasize natural and healthy products, and to show our Michigan pride and make it abundantly clear that our products are made in Michigan we created our own “Made in Michigan” stamp that we place on all of our product labels.”

You can shop for Simply Michigan products at their website, www.SimplyMichigan.com or at your local retailers. For holiday gift giving, you can use the new “Gift Basket Wizard” on the website to create special “Made in Michigan” gift baskets. “When using the Gift Basket Wizard you can select from many of the Made in Michigan items that we carry to make up your own custom Michigan Gift basket”, said Patti, “and it’s fun and easy to use.”

“We’re not a souvenir shop,” says Jim.  “We try to make it easy for our customers to purchase everyday products like weekly grocery items such as food or laundry soap  to Home & Garden products, Games & Toys, Art & Photography, Pet Products, Natural Baby Products, Michigan Gift Baskets, and even Utility trailers, all made in Michigan and all online so you don’t have to drive all over the state. We are Michiganders that own a business in Michigan, cooking with Michigan grown fruits and vegetables, and selling products Made in Michigan. You can’t get more Michigan than that!”
